Pelican Rapids Historic Chamber of Commerce

Fergus Falls, Minnesota

The Pelican Rapids Historic Chamber of Commerce & Visitor’s Center has been in continuous use since it was constructed.  Throughout its multiple uses the appearance of the town landmark has changed greatly.  Similar to many other City Halls throughout Minnesota, the building was used as the town’s fire hall, city hall, jail, meeting hall, and library.  Shultz + Associates researched historic photos and documents so that the building’s features were as close to the original components of the structure in capacity, as well as, design and detail.  The building underwent extensive work throughout the interior and exterior in order to uncover the historic character.  The arches and window cavities were reopened, the original pressed metal ceiling revealed, the bell tower with its trim recreated placed back in its original location.  The renovations of Historic Chamber of Commerce & Visitor’s Cener have made a significant impact on the pride of the town and were recognized by the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota to receive a 2004 Minnesota Preservation Award in addition to a ND AIA Restoration Award.
